Grassroots Advocate and Former City Council Candidate Nickie Kane Enters NY-10 Congressional Race
New York, NY – Nickie Kane, a grassroots advocate and former New York City Council candidate, has officially entered the race for Congress in New York’s 10th District, mounting a primary challenge to incumbent Dan Goldman. Kane will also face fellow challenger Brad Lander, according to campaign sources.
Kane announced the campaign this week, framing the bid as a people-powered effort rooted in democratic socialist values and focused on affordability, housing justice, climate action, and public safety through community investment.
In her press release, Kane said she wants to bring the priorities of the Zohran Mamdani campaign to Congress, arguing that voters in New York City have already made their values clear.
“The people of New York City have spoken,” Kane said. “By electing Zohran Mamdani, voters made it clear they want bold leadership that puts working people first. I want to bring that agenda to Congress.”
Early campaign posters reinforce that message, prominently featuring slogans such as “Healthcare Is A Human Right,” “Housing Is A Human Right,” and calls for a “Green New Deal.” Kane’s climate platform draws inspiration from national progressive leaders such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is widely known for championing the Green New Deal in Congress.
The campaign builds on Kane’s previous run for city council, which drew attention for its grassroots organizing approach. The Brooklyn Paper previously described Kane as follows:
“Nickie Kane is a community advocate and grassroots organizer. According to Kane’s campaign website, the candidate is running an ‘independent political campaign focused on bringing real change to Brooklyn,’ with a platform centered on community-driven solutions and common-sense reforms. Kane says she is ‘dedicated to representing the people, not the political machine.’”
New York’s 10th District, which includes Lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, continues to face rising rents, higher food and transit costs, and increasing climate risks such as flooding and extreme heat. Kane’s platform emphasizes stronger tenant protections, investment in permanently affordable housing, universal healthcare access, and climate policies designed to create good-paying union jobs while protecting frontline communities.
Incumbent Dan Goldman, first elected in 2022, is expected to run on his congressional record, while Brad Lander enters the race with name recognition from citywide office. Kane’s campaign argues that voters in NY-10 are seeking leadership grounded in lived community experience and grassroots organizing rather than traditional political pathways.
The Kane campaign is currently in its early organizing phase and is focused on building districtwide support and small-dollar fundraising. Additional campaign events and policy announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
